TACOMA, Wash. – Whitworth rolled to a 35-7 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 68-14 win at Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference football game on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates (7-1 overall, 4-1 NWC) rolled up 430 yards of offense by halftime and put the game away early in the third quarter.
Jaedyn Prewitt completed 16 of 21 passes for 371 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran four times for 34 yards and a score, finishing with 405 yards of total offense and five touchdowns, and he only played the first half and one series of the third quarter.
Whitworth scored only 49 seconds into the game when Prewitt hit Matthew Fiesta with a short pass over the middle and Fiesta outraced the defense for a 49-yard touchdown.
After the Pirates stopped Puget Sound on fourth down on their own three yard line, Solomon Hines capped a 97-yard drive with a ten-yard touchdown run. That score was set up by an 87-yard completion from Prewitt to Kanen Ables.
The Loggers cut the margin in half when Austin Knight caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Murdock Rutledge on the second UPS possession. But Whitworth immediately answered when Hines took a swing pass from Prewitt and raced 37-yards for a score.
The Pirates added two more scores late in the first. Jarvis Natividad took a screen pass 33 yards for a score with 2:41 left to cap a 75-yard drive that only took three plays. After Patrick Serrano blocked a punt, Isaiah Jones ran in from 15 yards with 43 seconds left in the period.
Whitworth scored the only touchdown of the second quarter when Prewitt carried in from 30 yards for his longest career touchdown run with 10:17 to go.
The Pirates stopped UPS on the first possession of the third and then quickly scored when Prewitt found Alan Ballew for a 19-yard touchdown to cap a 53-yard possession. Prewitt's day was done.
After Colten Chelin intercepted Rutledge and returned the ball to the four yard line, Luke Roberts scored to increase the margin to 55-7.
Puget Sound finally got back in the endzone when Silas Washington ran in from two yards out.
Whitworth scored again early in the fourth when Gio Fregoso found Carter Dorsing on fourth down for a 21-yard touchdown pass and a 62-14 lead. Fregoso finished 5 of 6 for 90 yards.
Whitworth sacked back up QB Jaylen Antoine for an eight-yard loss and fumble on the next possession, setting up Nate RaPue's 28-yard field goal. RaPue capped the scoring with a 35-yard field goal exactly halfway through the final quarter.
The Pirates finished with 625 yards of offense, including 461 through the air, both season highs. Puget Sound finished with 334 yards, split almost evenly between rushing (177) and passing (157).
The Bucs ran for 164 yards, led by Jones who had 64 and Spencer Lloyd, who had 43 in the fourth quarter. Hines caught four passes for 64 yards out of the backfield.
Gonzales led Whitworth with six tackles. Every Pirate defender in uniform played in the game.
Washington ran for 110 yards in the first quarter for Puget Sound and finished with 177 yards on 25 carries. Rutledge completed 10 of 30 passes for 148 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Whitworth will host Pacific (Ore.) next Saturday in the Pirates' final home game.
