Hard Hitting Defense Sparks BW Football Victory Over Marietta

BEREA, Ohio  – The Baldwin Wallace University football team hard hitting defense sparked a 17-3 Ohio Athletic Conference victory over Marietta College on the Tressel Field inside The George Finnie Stadium.

BW (7-1, 6-1 OAC), who recorded a season-high 92 tackles and a season-best six sacks, improved to 36-6 in the all-time series against Marietta (4-4, 3-4), including winning 13 of the last 14 meetings.

Offensively for the Yellow Jackets, freshman quarterback Keagan Armitage (Ashland) completed 12-of-22 passes for 166 yards with one touchdown. Sophomore All-OAC running back Jon Murray, Jr. (Cincinnati/Withrow) led the ground game as he rushed for 103  yards on 21carries with one touchdown. Junior wide out Iyan Mitchell (Tampa, Fla./Robinson) led the aerial assault as he caught three passes for 71 yards with a 61-yard touchdown.  Defensively, junior defensive lineman Taino Arocho (Holiday, Fla./Anclote) and sophomore linebacker Nick Pankow (Medina) each recorded a career-best 12 tackles.

The Pioneers were led by senior quarterback Kyle McSweeney as he completed 17-of-33 passes for 184 yards with three interceptions. Senior running back Tanner Clark led the ground game with 68 yards on 22 carries. Senior wide out Andrew Barker led the receiving corps as he caught nine passes for 127 yards. Defensively, sophomore linebacker Drake Neuberger recorded a game-high 16 tackles.

BW scored the only points of the first quarter when Armitage and Mitchell scored on a 61-yard pass play at the 1:24 mark.  Freshman placekicker Dean Sarris (Canton/GlenOak) added the extra point.

Marietta scored the only points of the second quarter as freshman placekicker Jacob Griffin nailed a 27-yard field goal with 14 seconds left in the opening.

The Yellow Jackets opened the third quarter scoring and pushed their lead to 14-3 when Murray, Jr. scored on one-yard run at the 11:56 mark.  Sarris tacked on the point after. 

BW extended its lead to 17-3 when Sarris hit a 21-yard field goal at 6:19 of the fourth and final quarter.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, November 9 when they travel to Ada for an OAC road finale game against Ohio Northern University at 1:30 p.m.  The final home game of the regular season is on Saturday, November 16 when the team hosts an OAC, Seniors' Day and 31st Battle for the Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Trophy game against crosstown rival John Carroll University at 1:30 p.m.
