St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 12, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis football team remained in the hunt for the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Championship with a 47-7 win over Elmhurst College Saturday at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis.
WashU improved its overall record to 4-1 and 3-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), while Elmhurst fell to 1-4 and 1-3 in the CCIW.
The Bears travel to No. 5 Wheaton College (Ill.) on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. The Thunder have a one-game lead over the Bears in the CCIW standings entering the second half of conference play.
Freshman kicker Chris Vartanian set a school record with four field goals – all in the first half. Vartanian recorded 16 points in the win, and connected on field goals from 22, 42, 33 and 42 yards. Vartanian's four field goals were second all-time in CCIW history.
WashU limited Elmhurst to 205 yards of total offense, and had 12 tackles for loss and five sacks in the win. The Bears also forced nine punts and limited Elmhurst to 5-of-18 (28%) on third down.
Sophomore linebacker John Christensen had a career 11 tackles, two tackles for loss and a pass break-up, while sophomore defensive lineman Anthony Brown added a pair of sacks.
The Bears jumped out to a commanding 26-0 lead at half.
In addition to Vartanian's four field goals, senior running back John Fisher had a seven-yard TD run and freshman wide receiver Michael Allison hauled in a 50-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Johnny Davidson in the first half.
Davidson connected with sophomore tight end Sam Fenske for a 46-yard TD and Allison added a 24-yard TD in the third quarter to make it 40-0. Sophomore wide receiver Khylan Nevils-Reed added an 85-yard TD reception in the fourth.
WashU totaled 492 yards of total, including 354 through the air. Davidson was 21-of-30 for 260 yards and three touchdowns, while junior QB Tim Tague was 2-of-3 for 94 yards and a TD.
Fisher led the ground game with 63 yards on 16 carries, while Allison had a career-high four catches for 90 yards and two TDs. Senior wide receiver Tim Matthiessen added seven receptions for 46 yards.
