Hope roll past No. 24 Trine in MIAA opener

The Hope College football team stole the thunder from 24th-ranked and two-time reigning MIAA champion Trine University in Saturday's opener.
 
The Flying Dutchmen cruised to a 51-0 victory on Trine's homecoming in Angola, Indiana.
 
Hope is now 3-1 overall and winners of three games in a row.
 
Senior quarterback Mason Opple (Hudsonville HS) rushed for a game-high 102 yards and one touchdown while also passing for 210 yards and two touchdowns for the Flying Dutchmen.
 
Both of his touchdown passes went to senior receiver Cooper Cecchini, a high school teammate.
 
The shutout was Hope's first in a MIAA opener since a 38-0 win vs. Alma in 2010.
 
Senior defensive end Jake Babb (Caledonia) and senior linebacker Mason Dekker (West Ottawa) shared team-high honors for the Flying Dutchmen with six tackles.
 
Hope's next game is Saturday, October 12 against Albion College. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium.
