MENOMONIE (September 14, 2019) – Gustavus Adolphus rolled off five consecutive touchdowns over the end of the first half and in the third quarter and went on to defeat UW-Stout 41-31 Saturday at Don and Nona Williams Stadium.
With Stout leading 15-8, the Gusties scored on quarterback Michael Veldman's five-yard run, only to see their two-point pass attempt intercepted by Dylan Peterson, who pitched the ball back to Jed Schlegel about midfield and returned the ball for a two-point defensive extra-point at 5:18 of the second period.
But the Gusties (2-0) got the momentum back and scored at 3:39 of the second on Veldman's 17 yard strike to Brice Panning and took a 28-17 halftime lead on David Peal's three yard run.
The Gusties continued on the roll in the second half when Josh Kirk hauled in a nine yard pass from Veldman at 10:55 and Veldman rushed for a 10 yard run at 7:28 for a 41-17 lead.
The Blue Devils (0-2), remembering last year's comeback win over the Gusties scored just before the end of the third quarter, but could really get nothing going In the fourth quarter until Tyler Seymour made a leaping catch in the end zone for a 13 yard score with 15 seconds remaining.
The Blue Devils outgained Gustavus, 393-377, but got quite a few yards when the Gusties were in a prevent defense.
Veldman threw for 249 yards, going 18-28 with three TD passes and no interceptions. Kirk hauled in eight catches for 114 yards and Panning had six catches for 94 yards. Veldman ran for two scores and picked up 43 yards and was sacked only once. Peal ran for 60 yards on 22 carries as the Gusties gained 128 yards on the ground.
The Blue Devils' Sean Borgerding was 22-46 for 278 yards and two scores, but was intercepted three times. Levy Hamer pulled down eight catches for 138 yards and Seymour had four receptions for 66 yards. Stout had 115 yards rushing with Nick Arguedas collecting 38 yards and Borgerding and Josh Nitek 35 yards each.
Stout is off next week and will travel to Thousand Oaks, Calif., to play at California Lutheran University, Saturday, Sept. 28.
