Chimera Wins First Game as Head Coach
« Last week's 17-12 win at Randolph-Macon was the first for Greg Chimera as head coach of the Blue Jays. Chimera was named the head coach on February 22, 2019 after long-time coach Jim Margraff passed away suddenly on January 2, 2019.
« Chimera played at Johns Hopkins from 2005-08 before spending the 2009-18 seasons as an assistant coach under Margraff.
« In 10 seasons as a member of the coaching staff, Chimera helped guide the Blue Jays to a record of 102-17, 10 consecutive Centennial Conference titles and nine trips to the NCAA Playoffs.
« Chimera served as the Blue Jay offensive coordinator from 2014-18. During that time, Johns Hopkins averaged 502.9 yards and 42.1 points per game (over a span of 61 games).
It's Been a While
« With the 17-12 win last week at Randolph-Macon in his head coaching debut, Greg Chimera became the first Johns Hopkins football coach in 99 years to win his first game.
« Prior to Chimera, the last Johns Hopkins football coach to win his first game was Ray Van Orman, who picked up a 34-14 win against Mount St. Mary's on October 2, 1920.
« After Van Orman's win in his debut, 10 different Blue Jay head coaches dropped their opening game before Chimera broke the streak with the win at Randolph-Macon.
On This Date
« This week's game will be just the fourth for Johns Hopkins on September 14. The Blue Jays topped Washington & Lee (21-14 in OT) in 2002, fell to Gettysburg (41-7) in 2007 and knocked off Susquehanna (24-7) in their three previous games on this date.
Kilbane Honored
« Johns Hopkins junior cornerback Macauley Kilbane was named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the 17-12 season-opening win at Randolph-Macon.
« Kilbane posted five tackles, four pass breakups and one interception in the win against the Yellow Jackets to earn CC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career.
« With his performance last week at RMC, Kilbane is now just one tackle shy of 100 for his career.
Defense on a Regular Season Roll
« The Johns Hopkins defense held Randolph-Macon to just 279 yards of total offense and 12 points in last week's season-opening victory.
« The 12 points the Blue Jays allowed marked the ninth consecutive regular season game in which Johns Hopkins has allowed 17 points or less.
« Ironically, the last team to top 17 points against JHU in a regular season game was Susquehanna, which scored 37 in a 37-35 win against the Blue Jays early in the 2018 season.
« Overall, after allowing an average of 34 points per game in the first two games of the 2018 season, the Blue Jay defense held 10 of its final 12 opponents to 17 points or less.
« Over the final 12 games of the 2018 season, only top-ranked Mount Union (28 in a 28-20 win over JHU in the NCAA Semifinals) and sixth-ranked Frostburg St. (27 in a 58-27 JHU win in the second round of the NCAAs) topped 17 points against the Blue Jays.
Blue Jays Pick Four
« The Johns Hopkins defense intercepted four passes - all in the fourth quarter - in last week's 17-12 win at Randolph-Macon.
« The four interceptions mark the 13th time since 2001 that the Johns Hopkins defense has intercepted four or more passes in a game. The last four-INT game for JHU came last October in a 27-16 win over 22nd-ranked Muhlenberg.
« The last time Johns Hopkins came up with four or more interceptions in a season opener was in 2008, when the Blue Jays had five in a 34-3 win against St. Lawrence at Homewood Field. The starting fullback for Johns Hopkins that day? Greg Chimera.
