Lynx dominate final three quarters over BSC; Improve to 3-1 on the year

More news about: Rhodes

Birmingham, Ala. - Rhodes College football fell behind early in their first conference road contest, but the Lynx, who were down 10-0, scored 29 straight points to overtake the Birmingham-College Panthers Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Lynx to 3-1 on the year as they held the Panthers scoreless after the first quarter.

Down 10 points, Rhodes drove down the field, acquiring 40 yards off an Adam Martinez reception, taking the Lynx to BSC's 10 yard line. Monroe McKay ran in for the first touchdown of the afternoon to put the Lynx on the scoreboard. After committing their third turnover of the game, and down by three, Rhodes re-gained possession on a BSC turnover on a Brycen Brown fumble recovery. The Lynx were able to take a 14-10 lead on the same drive when PJ Settles ran in the ball on a three-yard touchdown.

Both teams were forced to punt on their ensuing possessions. BSC tried to score again before the end of the half, but their 31-yard field goal attempt went wide right as time expired.

Receiving the ball to open the second half, Martinez ran the kickoff back 91 yards to give Rhodes a 21-10 lead. He would tally 152 return yards and 93 reception yards to total of 255 yards on the day.

On BSC's second drive of the third quarter, Trent Holt wrapped up Trevor Oakes in the end zone for a safety. The Lynx scored the final touchdown on their very next drive on a Josh Lucas four-yard reception. BSC's final drive of the third quarter ended on third and goal after Kobe Philalom hurried Oakes, allowing Alden Seger to record the only Lynx interception.

During BSC's second drive of the fourth quarter, Rhodes sacked Oakes on back-to-back plays on solo tackles by Jordan McCoy (loss of six yards) and D'On Coofer (loss of eight yards) to force a turnover on downs and allow the Lynx to run out the final two minutes.

Defensively, Duke Sherrell tallied six solo tackles. McCoy and Lawrence Jones combined for a sack in BSC's opening drive of the second quarter. Lucas tallied the Lynx-long 56 yard reception during the same drive he crossed into the end zone. Settles totaled 218 yards passing and led Rhodes with 79 net rushing yards as the Lynx finished with 374 total yards in the win. McKay concluded the day with 52 rushing yards. Freshman kicker Stephan Jean-Francois averaged 56 yards on five kickoffs. He made all three extra-point attempts.

Rhodes is on the road again next week, with a night game at Millsaps. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
