Opposing fast start subdues Black and Gold

ANGOLA, IND. – Junior running back Donovan Henderson (Hollywood, Fla.) ended just shy of a fifth 100-yard-plus rushing effort Thursday, August 30, leading Manchester University in a battle with Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association power Trine University.

Henderson rambled for 90 yards on 21 carries to highlight an offensive attack that generated just over 200 yards against a stout Thunder defense at Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium. On the other side of the ball, Trine's offense was fueled by a juggernaut rushing attack that produced 395 yards and five touchdowns leading the home side to a 55-7 non-conference victory.

Head coach Nate Jensen's squad tried to battle back from a 34-0 first half deficit but five turnovers proved costly to some offensive opportunities throughout the evening. The Spartans' faithful which filled the visiting side to near capacity on a crisp clear late summer evening did rise to its feet late in the first half when freshman wide receiver Harrington Greer (South Bend, Ind.) hauled in a nine-yard scoring strike from first-year signal caller Bryce Tomasi (Mishawaka, Ind.) followed by a third newcomer in place-kicker Andrew Kibler (Coral Gables, Fla.) hitting the extra point.

On the defensive statistics sheet, sophomore defensive back Nick Tillman (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) and senior defensive back Dillon Nelson (Fairland, Ind.) each registered double-digits in tackles. Tillman led the unit with 11, while Nelson was close behind with 10.

Manchester University resumes a two-game road stretch to begin the 2018 campaign Saturday, Sept. 8. They face off against another MIAA foe in Alma College with a 6 p.m. kickoff at AC's Bahlke Field.
