Jones Leads Bears to 33-7 Season Opening Win over UNE

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Junior quarterback Ryan Jones had 411 yards of total offense and threw for a career-high 336 yards and two scores while rushing for 75 yards and a touchdown leading Coast Guard to a 33-7 win over the University of New England in the season opener.

It was the first game in program history for the Nor'Easters.

Coast Guard finished with 512 yards of total offense, 339 passing and 173 rushing yards.

Jones was 23 of  39 for 336 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and he carried 16 times for 75 yards and a score to earn his first collegiate win.

Sophomore Justin Moffatt tied a career-high with nine receptions for a career best 157 yards to lead the Bears.

Coast Guard scored on its opening possession on a 36-yard field goal by senior Cole Austin with 10:18 left.

The Bears would march 84 yards in just five plays on their second drive and Jones threw a 21—yard touchdown to junior Liam Middleton to push the lead to 10-0 with 3:28 left in the opening quarter.

Jones would cap a 12 play, 88 yard drive with a 5-yard run with 9:50 left in the first half to make the score 17-0.

UNE would score the first touchdown in program history on a 9-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Brian Peters to freshman Devon Charles with 7:54 left in the half to cap a five play, 73 yard drive.

Peters finished the game 21 of 35 for 242 yards and a touchdown.

Coast Guard had 286 yards at half while UNE had 189 first half yards.

Jones was 13 of 21 for 221 yards and had eight carries for 40 yards in the first half.

The Bears would score on the opening drive of the second half on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Jones to sophomore running back Chris Gardner, his first career touchdown. Coast Guard led 24-7 with 11:52 to go in the third quarter.

Austin would boot a 25-yard field goal on the final play of the quarter to make the score 27-7.

Freshman James Duren would make a memorable collegiate debut as he scampered 40 yard for a touchdown on the first carry of his career with 45 seconds left. The extra point was blocked to make the final 33-7.

Sophomore Ryan Gaboury had seven receptions for 92 yards to lead the Nor'Easters while freshman Devon Charles had five carries for 35 yards to lead UNE on the ground.

Wagner had 95 yards of total offense for Coast Guard as he carried seven times for 44 yards and had five receptions for 51 yards.

Junior Patrick Crowley led the Coast Guard defense with eight tackles while sophomore Colby Coco had an interception that he returned 22 yards for the Bears. Sophomore Andre Horner recovered a fumble for the Bears, who won the season opener for the fourth straight season.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 9th when they host Union in a non-conference game at 1:30.
