Ryan Slager breaks Grinnell career tackle record in game against Beloit

GRINNELL, Iowa – Ryan Slager '19 became Grinnell College's all-time tackling leader Saturday in the Pioneers' football season finale against Beloit College at Rosenbloom Field.

 

Slager needed four tackles to tie Lee Kraemer's school mark of 433, and reached that in the first quarter. He added another stop after that and several more to finish the game with 18.

 

He now has 447 tackles with yet a season to play. Additionally, the nation's top tackler finished the year with 159 after leading all of NCAA D-III last year with a total of 154.

 

He also had three tackles for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery in Saturday's game, which Beloit won 35-0.

 

Rick Johnson '20 added 13 tackles, Jeff Keele '19 put up 10 and Bem Lim '19, Reed Winter '21 and Jordan Hall '20 six apiece for Grinnell.

 

Offensively, Carson Dunn '18 rushed for 128 yards to finish his career with 1,586. He scored nine touchdowns, while also posting 1,017 receiving yards and four scores.

 

Tony Bergida '18, who passed for 95 yards Saturday, finished his career with 2,773 yards and 15 scores.

 

David Taylor '20 had six catches for 50 yards Saturday, while Max Hill '20 added three catches for 26 yards.

 

Grinnell, hurt by four turnovers, saw Beloit score twice in the first period. Grinnell drove deep into Beloit territory twice in the second period but couldn't score as the visitors led 14-0 at halftime.

 

Beloit added 14 points in the third period and seven in the fourth to improve to 1-9. Grinnell finished 1-9, but only loses a handful of seniors.
