BSC Drives to Victory at LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga. – Senior quarterback Kerrigan Pennington (Wagerville, Ala./Washington County HS) found Buddy Dowd (Dothan, Ala./Northview HS) on a 28-yard touchdown pass with one minute left that handed Birmingham-Southern football the 29-25 win over LaGrange College Saturday afternoon.  BSC (1-0) needed only 1:30 to march down the field to victory in the fourth quarter. 

 

The Panthers' defense grabbed three interceptions and two sacks to help hold LaGrange.  Pennington led the team in passing and rushing yards.  He threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions and rushed for a game-high 80 yards including a touchdown. 

 

Along with Dowd, Pennington also found Damian Mitchell (Maplesville, Ala./Maplesville HS) for a 38-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter.  His rushing touchdown was a 28-yard dash.

 

Mitchell finished with a team-high 60 receiving yards.

 

Defensively, Cole Murphy (Gaylesville, Ala./Gaylesville HS) and Hunter McEntire(Newton, Ala./Houston Academy) led the team in tackles with 11 and 10, respectively.  Cedric Campbell (McDonough, Ga./Dutchtown HS), Matthew Byers (Pelham, Ala./John Carroll Catholic HS), and Dylan Main (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) earned their first interceptions of the season.  Campbell returned his 46 yards.

 

Sy Butler (Childersburg, Ala./Childersburg HS) sacked LaGrange quarterback Conner Blair for a loss of 17 yards in the second quarter that led to a fumble.  The ball was picked up by Blaine Loveless (Ringgold, Ga./Heritage HS) and returned 24 yards to give the Panthers their first touchdown of the game.

 

On special teams, Jamal Watkins (Hampton, Ga./Dodge City CC) combined for 92 return yards.  And Ryder Andrews (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS) handled the majority of kicking responsibilities, earning five points.  He also averaged 57.5 yards per kickoff, and 39.3 yards per punt.

 

BSC returns to Birmingham for its season opener on Saturday, Sept. 9.  Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. against Huntingdon College.  It will be the Panthers only night game of the season.
