Tigers Fall to Pomona in Battle for the Drum

More news about: Occidental

LOS ANGELES — Chris Rom-Toribio and the Occidental running game had a huge day on the ground, rushing for 307 yards on 28 carries and four touchdowns as a group.

But Pomona-Pitzer made more plays, controlled the time of possession and the Tigers couldn't hang on to the Drum for a 13th consecutive year in a 42-35 loss to the Sagehens on Homecoming on Saturday at Jack Kemp Stadium.

The annual game between the Tigers and Sagehens is the longest standing college football rivalry on the West Coast.

Rom-Toribio had 13 carries for 212 yards and a 67-yard touchdown run. He was the standout on Oxy's offense that is usually known for its passing game. Coming into the night, the Tigers ranked No. 4 in the country in passing yards per game with 371.2 yards per game.

Oxy quarterback Bryan Scott, who broke the SCIAC record for career passing yards last week and is ranked No. 15 in yards per game in the nation, did more work with his legs, running for three scores.

Scott finished the day 174 yards passing and one touchdown to his top target Cordell Harris, who made four catches for 48 yards.

Oxy running back Max Gruber chipped in 10 carries for 81 yards with a long of 50.

Trailing 42-35 on a 4th and 1 with less than 1 minute to play, the Tigers could not get the stop they needed to get one more chance with the ball.

The Sagehens got 127 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns from running back Aseal Birir and 268 yards passing and two touchdowns from quarterback Edward Sias.

Marcus McDuffie led Oxy with 13 tackles, Eamon McNeil had 11 and Benjamin Kamerin had eight tackles, including two for a loss and a sack.

Season Impact: Oxy falls to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in SCIAC play.

Pomona-Pitzer improves to 5-1 and 4-0.

Next Game: The Tigers are back in action against Whittier in the Battle for the Shoes on Oct. 29 at Jack Kemp Stadium at 7 p.m.
