Football Falls At Defiance

Too many turnovers thwarted the Hope College football team's bid to claim a road win at Defiance, Ohio on Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen fell to 0-2 on the season after the 18-6 nonleague loss.

Freshman Cooper Cecchini of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS) led Hope in offense with 78 yards receiving on five catches.

Junior running back Brandon Campbell of Otsego, Michigan (Otsego) recorded a team-best 64 yards rushing on 12 carries.

Hope could not overcome eight turnovers, including a 45-yard fumble recovery Defiance (1-1) returned 45 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Defiance intercepted freshman quarterback Bruce Schroeder of Appleton, Wisconsin (North) five times. The Yellow Jackets also recovered three fumbles.

Senior defensive back Andy Lucas of McBain, Michigan (McBain) topped the Hope defense tackle with eight tackles and one pass breakup.

The Flying Dutchmen limited Defiance to 295 yards in total offense. Hope made 10 tackles that resulted in negative yardage.

The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 with a 1 p.m. Central kickoff at Concordia-Chicago.
