SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 17, 2015) – Behind an impressive offensive performance, Southern Athletic Association (SAA) member Washington University earned a 38-15 win, Saturday, over the Sewanee football team at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
The Bears wasted little time scoring on their opening drive. Wash. U marched 67 yards in 1:25 as quarterback J.J. Tomlin found Hank Childs on an out-pattern for a one-yard touchdown pass.
Sewanee played well on its opening drive. The Tigers picked up five first downs, which included a fourth and five play in which Devante Jones earned on a hard run. Unfortunately, the drive stalled three plays later and Callum Wishart's 37-yard field goal missed wide left.
The score remained at 7-0 into the second quarter. That is when the Bears' offense came alive again. Washington scored four straight times, including three touchdowns. That gave the Bears a 31-0 lead at halftime.
Sewanee finally found the end zone midway through the third quarter, as freshman quarterbackAllan Parrott connected with receiver Steven Hearn for a 32-yard touchdown pass.
With that, any chance of a Tiger comeback was short lived as Washington quickly raced back down the field on the ensuing possession. The Bears capped off an eight-play, 55-yard drive that took 3:20 off the clock. After he found multiple receivers on the drive, Tomlin connected with Mitch McMahon for a 10-yard TD pass.
Sewanee added one final late score in the fourth quarter as freshman Zach Keller ran in his first career touchdown from six yards out.
Overall, Tomlin was outstanding. The Wash. U signal-caller finished 26-of-33 for 287 yards and four touchdowns in only three quarters. The Bears also finished with 12 different players with receiving yards. That included four different receivers that caught touchdown passes.
The two bright spots for Sewanee were the play of Parrott and Jones. Making his first-ever career start, Parrott finished with 145 total yards and touchdown. Jones became the first Tiger this season to rush for more than 100 yards as the senior captain finished with 133.
Sewanee will look to snap its recent losing streak with a 1:00 p.m. contest against rival Centre next Saturday at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
