Tommies pitch shutout, stay unbeaten

Senior QB John Gould completed 8-of-10 passes for 171 yards and four touchdowns as the No. 9-ranked Tommies (4-0 overall, 2-0 MIAC) stayed unbeaten with a home shutout of the Oles (1-4, 0-3).

St. Thomas' defense allowed just 47 net yards, including 5 net rushing yards. UST forced 14 punts and allowed just two St. Olaf first downs. The Toms have allowed just 28 points in four games and have limited opponents to 161 net rushing yards on 138 attempts.

Saturday was the 37th time in 90 games under Coach Glenn Caruso that St. Thomas has held a team to 10 or less points.

Junior RB Jordan Roberts rushed 12 times for 126 yards and two TDs in limited play to help a UST offense that recorded 30 first downs and gained 650 yards. Freshman RB Tucker Trettel had 93 yards on offense as he rushed for 79 yards and had a 14-yard catch.

UST took a 27-0 lead in the game's first 13:05. The Tommies used nearly 120 players, including four quarterbacks.

St. Thomas (2-0) and Gustavus (3-0) are the MIAC's lone unbeatens through just three weeks of the season, as Bethel lost 23-21 at Concordia. The Cobbers, Johnnies, Bethel and Augsburg each has one MIAC defeat.

The Tommies play Oct. 10 at Augsburg.
