Hiram tops Ohio Wesleyan 35-28 for fourth win of season

DELAWARE, OHIO -- Freshman Brendon Carr (Wellsville/Wellsville Local) scored a two-yard touchdown with 1:45 left to give the Hiram College football team a 35-28 victory at Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

The Terriers improve to 4-3 on the season and 3-3 in the NCAC, while the Battling Bishops fall to 4-3, 3-3.

The four wins are the most for Hiram since the 1995 season.

Senior Robert Partridge (Massillon/Washington) completed 22-of-35 passes for 308 yards and three touchdowns. He also finished with 42 yards on the ground on eight carries.

Junior Nate Eaton (South Euclid/Walnut Ridge) had eight receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown. Junior Jaylen Dinard (Tampa, Fla./Paul R. Wharton) added seven catches for 109 yards, both of which were career-highs.

Sophomore David Perkins (Santa Ana, Calif./Segerstrom) finished with eight carries for 81 yards and a touchdown, all of which came in the second half.

Defensively, junior D.D. Fleetion (Youngstown/East) had a team-high 10 tackles. Senior James Romanowski (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and junior Tevin Weaver (Garfield Heights) each had nine tackles.

Carr's run capped a 10-play, 84-yard drive that took 4:27 off the clock.

OWU looked to answer, but senior Mario Lemuel (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) batted down a pass on a decisive fourth-and-three with under a minute to play, clinching the win for the Terriers.

On the first play of the game, OWU's Calvin Cagney broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run. The Battling Bishops converted a two-point conversion to take a 8-0 lead.

The Terriers responded with a eight-play, 67-yard drive, capped of on a two-yard touchdown pass from Partridge to freshman Mike Skizenta (Bedford). Hiram's two-point attempt failed, making the score 8-6.

Ohio Wesleyan was able to capitalize on a Partridge interception late in the first quarter and score a touchdown, making the score 15-6.

Hiram cut the deficit to 15-13, when Partridge hooked up with sophomore Joshua Philander (Fort Myers, Fla./South Fort Myers) on a 29-yard touchdown pass to cap off a seven-play, 90-yard drive.

A 32-yard field goal by Ohio Wesleyan early in the third quarter pushed its lead 18-13.

Perkins scored on a 14-yard scamper and Partridge converted a two-point conversion to Dinard, giving the Terriers a 21-18 lead with 4:12 left in the third quarter.

OWU answered with a 23-yard field goal late in the third to tie the score up at 21-21.

Partridge found Eaton for a 15-yard touchdown strike to give Hiram a 28-21 lead with 11:48 left to play. But Ohio Wesleyan was able to tie the game at 28-28 with 6:19 left to play, on a three-yard touchdown run.

The Battling Bishops were led by Calvin Cagney, who had nine rushes for 130 yards and seven receptions for 76.

The Terriers outgained OWU 503-460 and limited the Battling Bishops to 3-of-14 of third down conversions.

Hiram will return to action on November 1, when it hosts No. 10-ranked Wabash (Ind.) at Henry Field at 1 p.m.
