Hope Football Downs Alma 33-7 To Stay In MIAA Title Contention

A season-high four rushing touchdowns carried the Hope College football team to a 33-7 win at Alma on Saturday.

Senior Reggie Duncan of Williamston, Michigan (Williamston HS), recorded two of the scores as the Flying Dutchmen raised their record to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

Hope moved into a second-place tie with Adrian in the MIAA standings. Trine remains in first at 3-0 after defeating Albion 51-45 on Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen surged ahead 26-7 at halftime by producing 19 second-quarter points in a span of 4 minutes, 16 seconds.

Senior Bill Brown of Lawton, Michigan (Lawton HS), scored on a 1-yard run to snap a 7-7 tie and put Hope ahead 13-7 with 4:54 remaining in the second quarter.

Junior Andrew Lapak of Montrose, Michigan (Birch Run HS), then intercepted an Alma pass to set up another Hope touchdown. He returned it 36 yards to the Alma 6-yard line.

Duncan scored from 6 yards out on Hope's first play from scrimmage after the turnover for a 19-7 lead. He finished with 82 yards on 10 carries, including a first-touchdown touchdown run of 3 yards.

The Flying Dutchmen stopped Alma on downs and produced a 56-yard scoring drive that lasted just 20 seconds.

Junior Robert Kish of Grosse Pointe, Michigan (Grosse Pointe South HS), completed three passes during the drive. The final one came on a 23-yard touchdown strike with junior Matt Kroll of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS).

Senior Aaron Mick of Clinton Township, Michigan (Parkway Christian HS). kicked the PAT for a 26-7 halftime lead.

Sophomore Zac Boersema of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS), tacked on a 4-yard touchdown run during the third quarter. He finished with a game-high 83 yards on 16 carries.

Kish completed 14-of-22 passes for 168 yards. He connected with eight different receivers.

The seven points allowed was a season-best for Hope.

Senior Cody Lindemulder of Mulliken, Michigan (Lake Odessa HS), recorded a game-high 11.5 tackles. He collected one sack.

Senior Stephen Gerger of Laingsburg, Michigan (Laingsburg HS), totaled two sacks. He leads the Flying Dutchmen with 6 ½ sacks this season.

The win was Hope's ninth in the past 10 games against Alma. The Flying Dutchmen lead the all-time series by a 54-31-4 margin.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 1, when it plays at Adrian. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
