UW-La Crosse Earns WIAC Victory over UW-Stout

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team earned a 21-7 victory over UW-Stout Saturday afternoon Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.  The Eagles improve to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils drop to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference.  UW-L has now won the last three meetings with UW-Stout.

The game remained tied 0-0 at the end of the first quarter as both teams missed field goals.  UW-Stout's Taylor Pahl missed wide right from 43-yards out with 8:21 left in the opening quarter while UW-L's Joshua Fischer had his 44-yard field goal blocked by the Blue Devils' Iyen Ogbomoh with 2:59 remaining.

Pahl missed wide right for the second time on a 30-yard field goal attempt with 8:39 left in the second quarter.  After the teams traded punts, UW-L took over at its own 29-yard line with 4:45 remaining in the half.  The Eagles went 74 yards on 12 plays and 4:15 to take a 7-0 lead with Trent Cummings throwing a 19-yard touchdown pass to Scott Shewmon with :35 left in the quarter.  Fischer's extra-point was good for a 7-0 lead. 

UW-L led 7-0 at halftime.

On the first possession of the second half, UW-Stout's Garrett Peterson was intercepted by UW-L's Zach Wall.  On the first next play from scrimmage, the Blue Devils' James Van Thiel intercepted Cummings and returned it to midfield.  UW-Stout drove to the UW-L 15-yard line on the ensuing drive and faced a fourth-and-seven. Peterson was intercepted by Jacob Flegner in the UW-L end-zone, who returned the ball to Eagles' 26-yard line.  Two plays later, Cummings was sacked by Kyle Hoefft and UW-Stout's Tyler Naatz recovered at UW-L's 13-yard line.

The Blue Devisls went 13 yards on six plays and 2:32 to tie the game with Adolfo Pacheco scoring on a one-yard run with 4:14 left in the third.  Pahl's extra-point tied the game at 7-7.

UW-L took a 13-7 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter with Ben Hertrampf scoring on a one-yard run.  Fischer's extra-point was missed.  The Eagles went 65 yards on 10 plays and 4:16. Hertrampf and Cummings combined for 65 yards of offense on the drive. Hertrampf had 21 yards rushing while Cummings went four-of-four passing for 41 yards. Cummings also had a three-yard rush for a first down on a fourth-and-one at the UW-Stout 36-yard line.

UW-Stout was forced to punt on its next drive with Peterson punting 43-yards to down the ball at the UW-L two-yard line.  The Eagles went 98 yards on nine plays and 4:50 as Hertrampf scored on a 53-yard touchdown run.  Cummings had an 18-yard completion to Chris Stackhouse on the drive.  Cummings hit Tony Favre on the two-point attempt to give UW-L a 21-7 lead with 5:34 remaining.

The Blue Devils drove to the Eagles' 28-yard line, but Flegner recorded his second interception of the game at UW-L's seven-yard line with 2:44 remaining.

UW-L totaled 295 yards of offfense Saturday, including 147 rushing and 148 passing.  Hertrampf finished with 137 yards rushing on 18 attempts (7.6 average) and two touchdowns.  It is Hertrampf's seventh career 100-yard rushing game and now has 2,084 career rushing yards.  Hertrampf is the ninth player in school history to record over 2,000 career rushing yards.

Cummings finished 14-of-23 for 148 yards with one touchdown and one interception Saturday.  He was sacked twice. Khadel Akindolire-King caught four passes for 28 yards while Shewmon (46 yards, one touchdown) and Tony Bilderback (36 yards) each had three catches.

The Eagles had 17 first downs while finishing five-of-11 on third-down and two-of-two on fourth-down.

UW-Stout finished with 262 yards, including 107 rushing and 155 passing. Tanner Kuehn led the Blue Devils with 32 yards rushing on eight attempts while Cody Rosemeyer finished with 31 yards on five carries.  Peterson went 26-of-37 for 155 yards with three interceptions. He was sacked twice. Matt Small (45 yards), Aaron Jenny (37) and Kuehn (32) each had six receptions.

The Blue Devils had 20 first downs while finishing six-of-14 on third-down and two-of-three on fourth-down.  UW-Stout won the time of possession, 32:50 to 27:10.

Shane Rockweiler led UW-L with 18 tackles, including nine unassisted. Mitch Hawkins had 13 tackles, including seven unassisted, and 2.0 for loss.  Jacob DeSantis had eight tackles, including 3.0 for loss, 1.5 quarterback sacks and one forced fumble. Flegner had two interceptions.

Luke Bakkum led UW-Stout's defense with nine tackles while LaRon Thompson finished with seven. Collin Laursen and Hoefft each had 1.0 quarterback sack.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, October 25 at 13th-ranked UW-Stevens Point at 1 p.m.
