Football starts fast in MIAC defeat of Pipers

Eight different players scored touchdowns in Saturday's 62-24 win for Tommie Football at Hamline.

No. 20-ranked UST (5-1 overall, 3-1 MIAC) outscored the host Pipers 27-0 in the second quarter to break open a close game and build a 48-14 halftime lead.

The teams combined for 48 first downs and 985 yards of offense.

Junor QB Matt O'Connell completed 16-of-24 passes for 305 yards and two TDs. Brenton Braddock rushed 14 times for 102 yards and Charlie Dowdle had seven catches for 117 yards.

The St. Thomas offense converted 8-of-13 on third and fourth downs and punted just once as it collected 526 yards on the game.

Kyle Coyne returned a second-quarter interception 28 yards for a TD. Jordan Millis had a 49-yard kickoff return to set up another TD.

The Tommies have outscored their last three opponents 134-21 in the first two quarters of their games.

St. Thomas plays at No. 10-ranked Bethel next Saturday.
