Macalester wins on Clovis Ray Day

Macalester's defense turned in its second strong effort of the season as the Scots move to 2-0 with a 17-13 triumph over Concordia University of Mequon, Wis. on Clovis Ray Day at Macalester Stadium.  The Scots had five QB sacks and another five tackles for loss of yardage, and held the Falcons to 12 first downs.

 

Jole Miller (So., Missouri Valley, Ia.) and David Melms (Sr., Wauwatos, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran) attacked from the secondary to lead the Macalester defense with seven tackles apiece, while Miller also picked off a Concordia pass with :02 left to ice the victory.  Jacob Lueck (So., Eagan, Minn.) registered 2 ½ sacks and Reid Callahan (Jr., Atlanta, Ga. / St. Pius X) picked up two sacks and another tackle for a loss of nine yards.

 

Mike Adams (Sr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) sparked Macalester's second half comeback, averaging 5.9 yards on 15 carries for a total of 88 net yards.  Quarterback Clark Bledsoe (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla. / Episcopal) was held to 63 yards passing by the Falcon defense, but two went for touchdowns.  He tossed a seven-yard TD to Adams midway through the third quarter to put the Scots up 10-7, and a 12-yard scoring strike to C.J. Smith (Jr., Ashland, Wis.) on the final play of the third quarter to extend the lead to 17-7.

 

Adams set up Macalester first score, a 38-yard Auburn Jimenez (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif. / St. John Bosco) field goal, with a 17-yard punt return into Concordia territory.  Jimenez averaged 52 yards on his four punts.

 

The Falcons led 7-3 at the halftime break.  Concordia was led by receiver Garrett Wenzelburger, who grabbed seven receptions for 104 yards and a couple TD's.  He accounted for nearly half of his team's total yards on the day.  Concordia drops to 0-2 after losing to Augsburg last weekend.

 

Macalester goes for a 3-0 start next Saturday (Sept. 15) when it hosts Maranatha Baptist (Wis.) at 7 p.m.  It is then off to Portland, Ore., for a Sept. 22 game at Lewis & Clark.
