Bethel Wins Easily 54-10 in Home Opener

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Picking up right where they left off, the Bethel Royals Football team defeated the Concordia-Wisconsin University Falcons 54-10 in the second week of the season to improved to 2-0.

On a gorgeous afternoon at Royal Stadium, Bethel got off to a fast start thanks to a 14-yard touchdown reception by Jay Hilbrands (So., Clara City, Minn.). Just minutes later, Logan Flannery (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) busted a 36-yard run that would put the Royals up 14-0 entering the second quarter of play. 

Josh Aakre (Jr., Dawson, Minn.) threw his second touchdown pass of the afternoon for the Royals third score of the day, when he connected with Gabe Kleinschmidt(Jr., Hastings, Minn.) on an 11-yard pass. Flannery continued his torrid day when he collected another 30-yard plus run that would put the Royals up 28-0 later in the second quarter. With time winding down in the half, Kevin Lindh (So., Houston, Minn.) sprinted for a 4-yard run to move the score to 34-0 heading into the locker room.

With momentum in hand, Bethel continued their dominant play in the second half when Flannery ran for his third touchdown on the day, this time a 10-yard stroll into the end-zone.Kelson Carr (Jr., North Bend, Wash.) and Jesse Phenow (Fr., Richfield, Minn.) each saw significant action on Saturday and made the most of it. Carr ran for a 22-yard touchdown to give the Royals their second score in the third quarter. Phenow would tack on a 30-yard run of his own in the fourth quarter to finish off the Royals scoring on the day. 

In the 54-10 victory, Aakre completed 13 of 22 pass attempts for 138 yards and 2 touchdowns. His main target, Hilbrands collected 66 yards on 5 receptions and a touchdown. Phenow, Lindh, and Carr each finished the day with a touchdown apiece. Flannery racked up 113 yards on 11 rushes with 3 touchdowns.

The Royals continue play this weekend taking on Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota to open up MIAC play.
