The Carthage College football
team (3-0) closed out its non-conference schedule on Saturday,
Sept. 18 with a 51-3 win over Concordia University (Wis., 0-3) at
Century Stadium in Mequon, Wis. Carthage jumped out to a 17-0
lead in the first period. Tyler Funk booted a 52-yard field
goal at 11:58, before quarterback Evan Jones hooked up with Chris
Schulz on a 46-yard touchdown pass at 7:21. Funk missed the
extra point. Jake Smith caught a 63-yard touchdown pass from
Jones at 1:07 for the 17-0 margin.
Concordia's Dan Winsey
kicked a 23-yard field goal at 3:42 second period to put the
Falcons on the scoreboard. Jones hooked up with Jerome Brown
Jr. on a 26-yard TD pass at 1:59, and the Red Men led, 24-3, at
halftime. The Red Men scored 17 points in the third quarter to
take a 41-3 lead. Funk kicked a 29-yard field goal at
13:53. Jake Smith scored on a three-yard run at 11:51, and
Chris Schulz caught a four-yard pass from Evan Jones at
7:44. Carthage tacked on 10 final points in the fourth quarter
for the final, 51-3 margin. Steve Jones ran for a three-yard
TD at 13:38, and Tyler Funk connected on a third field goal, this
one a 22-yarder, at 1:24.
The Red Men rolled up 590 total
offensive yards, 162 rushing and 428 passing, while Concordia
(Wis.) had just 85 total yards, 22 on the ground and 63 in the
air. Carthage collected 22 first downs to just three for
Concordia. Evan Jones completed 21-of-38 passes for 428 yards
and four touchdowns. Jake Smith caught five passes for 140
yards , Mike Koeneman five passes for 127 yards, and Chris Schulz
snagged six for 80 yards. Steve Jones rushed eight times for
73 yards. Brian Hipchen intercepted two passes for the Red
Men, and Erik Solis collected a team-leading seven tackles.
"We didn't necessarily need a
blow out," said Carthage coach Tim Rucks, "but we did
need a complete-game effort from both the offensive and the
defense, which was something we hadn't done in the first two
games. We got that done, and our guys deserve credit for
that. Evan Jones looked sharp, even if that's something
we've just come to expect. We gave him good pass
protection, and we ran the ball a little bit. We got to play
some other people, like running back Reggie Miller, who's
really going to be a good one. It might not be too long
before he's a regular player for us. Our defense played
well, and we didn't allow Concordia even a first down for
almost a half. We're going to take advantage of the
off-week to get ready for North Central on Oct. 2. We know
they're the team to beat this year, and we have an extra week
that they won't have to get ready. We have some momentum
going into that game and two weeks to prepare."
Carthage is idle on Saturday,
Sept. 25 and returns to action on Oct. 2 by opening its
CCIW-schedule with a 6 p.m. game versus North Central College at
Benedetti-Wehril Stadium in Naperville, Ill.
