MILTON, Mass. — Senior running back Eddie Vachon (Newton, MA) rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown, leading Division II Stonehill College to a 20-14 win over Curry College in the season opener for both schools.

Curry struck first with a five-play, 39-yard drive that was capped off with a nine-yard scoring pass from senior Harold Rose (Bourne, MA) to sophomore Victor Martinez (Southbridge, MA). Stonehill responded on its next drive with a 27-yard pass from junior Tim Morrison (Billerica, MA) to sophomore John Gomes (Hyannis, MA), resulting in a 7-7 tie after one quarter.

The Skyhawks forced Curry to punt to open the second quarter, then took their first lead after another touchdown pass from Morrison to Gomes for seven yards. The visitors last score came late in the third when Vachon scampered 12 yards into the end zone.

The Colonels closed to within six at 20-14 at 6:51 of the fourth quarter when Rose ran a quarterback sneak from a yard out. Curry then stopped Stonehill's next drive at the Stonehill 39 and forced a punt. The Colonels began their drive at their own 27 and advanced the ball to Stonehill's 20 yard line. But a pair of sacks by sophomore Jonathan Poth (Nahant, MA) forced the Colonels to turn the ball over on downs and clinched the win for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill had a significant edge in total yards (401-220) as well as in first downs (19-10) and possession time (35:51-24:09). However, the Skyhawks committed two turnovers to Curry's none.

Vachon piled up his 153 rushing yards on 23 attempts. Morrison went 15-for-26 for 171 yards and a pair of picks. Gomes had seven receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Poth led Stonehill's defense with seven total tackles, including two sacks (-16 yards). Rose went 15-for-31 for 178 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore Robert Bambini (Westwood, MA) reeled in seven catches for a game-high 115 yards. Defensively, Curry was led by senior Bobby Driscoll (Milton, MA), with 9.5 total tackles and two interceptions. Junior Chris Haddad (Bellingham, MA) chipped in with 8.5 total tackles.

Next Saturday, Curry travels to Fitchburg State for a 1:30 p.m. contest, while Stonehill College returns home for a 7 p.m. match-up next Friday night with Pace University.
