Long return gives Maroons win in second overtime

CHICAGO -- Ryan McMillen returned a fumble 92 yards for a touchdown in overtime to give Carnegie Mellon a 23-17 win against Chicago in University Athletic Association play Saturday at Stagg Field.

Both teams missed field goals in the first overtime session. Chicago (4-2 overall, 1-2 UAA) took possession to start the second extra period and on a 13-yard pass from junior quarterback Josh Dunn to sophomore wide receiver Jim Raptis set up a first-and-goal from the Carnegie Mellon 2-yard line. On second-and-goal from the 3, sophomore tailback Sam Owens fumbled, McMillen recovered at the 8, and raced the length of the field for the winning score.

Carnegie Mellon (5-1, 2-1) tied the game on the final play of regulation on a 5-yard TD pass from Eric Zimpfer to Andrew Garrod. Chicago took a 17-10 lead with 30 seconds remaining on an 8-yard scoring strike from Dunn to senior wideout Brian Gutbrod. 
Garrod returned the ensuing kickoff to the Chicago 47, giving the Tartans the ball with 19 seconds left. After an incompletion, Zimpfer connected with Joshua Becker on a 42-yard pass play, moving the ball to the Chicago 5 with five seconds to play. Zimpfer then hit Garrod for the tying score.

Carnegie Mellon led 7-3 at halftime. The Tartans scored on a 20-yard pass from Zimpfer to Jeffrey Stolper midway through the opening stanza. Chicago got on the board at the 6:48 mark of the second stanza on a 37-yard field goal by senior kicker Roman Natoli. Natoli was 1-for-4 on field goal attempts, with two blocked kicks and one attempt hitting the crossbar.

CMU went up 10-3 on a 37-yard field goal by Michael Palmer with 9:05 left in the third quarter, before the Maroons tied the game at 10-10 on a 13-yard pass from Dunn to Raptis.

Zimpfer was 8-for-18 for 125 yards, while his counterpart Dunn finished the day 25-for-51 for 264 yards. Dunn was intercepted twice and sacked three times. Zimpfer also rushed for 71 yards on 15 carries.
