Mount Union and UMHB: The throwback semifinal

The University of Mount Union and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor have squared off just twice before, each time in Alliance, Ohio, with a trip to the Stagg Bowl on the line. In 2004, a young UMHB program played and won three NCAA playoff games on the road to get to the national semifinals and pulled off the upset of the No. 1 team with a late rally.

2004: The rally on the road

Mary Hardin-Baylor entered the fourth quarter down by two touchdowns, but rallied with the final 17 points to come away with the 38-35 win. Mount Union has played in every Stagg Bowl since this game.

 


 

2012: Returning the favor

Mount Union entered the fourth quarter down by two touchdowns, but scored the game-winning touchdown with five seconds left and intercepted a lateral on the game's final play, returning it for a score to win 48-35.
