1987 Playoffs

Stagg Bowl XV
Wagner 19, Dayton 3
Phenix City, Ala.

In a meeting of future Division I-AA opponents, Greg Kovar threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns, two in the first half, as Wagner defeated Dayton 19-3.

John Chaney and Keith Johnson each caught 22-yard touchdown passes in the first half, with Johnson's coming 20 seconds before halftime to give the Seahawks (13-1) a 19-0 lead.

Dayton (11-3) controlled time of possession and took 80 snaps but managed just 2.9 yards of total offense after averaging more than 400 yards per game during the postseason.

"This is just a great feeling," Wagner coach Walt Hameline said following the game. "I don't want to sound like that old coach's cliche, but we really did take them one game at a time. I think that's how we ended up getting the job done today."

Dayton's only points came on a 39-yard Mike Duvic field goal in the third quarter. The Flyers defeated Augustana earlier in the playoffs, ending the juggernaut's 60-game unbeaten streak.
