Coast Guard won a trophy game on a quarterback run in the closing seconds, Carroll had its closing seconds extended by a play and St. Norbert confirmed the bar for 2018 was set at 91 points in Division III football action on Saturday, Sept. 22.

Quarterback Ryan Jones' 3-yard touchdown run on fourth down with nine seconds left lifted Coast Guard to a dramatic 38-35 win over Norwich to capture The Mug. Norwich had taken the lead 35-31 on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Matt Dunn (23 of 35 for 274 yards) to Manni Romero (seven receptions, 118 yards) with 4:01 left, the combo's fourth touchdown of the game, before the Bears marched 76 yards in 16 plays, converting three fourth downs for the game-winning score.

Coast Guard is off to a 3-1 start for the second straight season and beat the Cadets for the third straight time for The Mug.

Carroll was driving on Elmhurst in the closing minute and appeared to benefit from an extra down on the decisive series in a 16-14 win. Out of timeouts, the Pioneers (2-1, 1-1 CCIW) completed a ball over the middle down to the Elmhurst 13-yard line, lined up and spiked the ball. However, the officials determined that the play should not count because the chains hadn't been set. The down marker moved to second down, although the officials indicated first down. Elmhurst then threw three plays to the end zone and converted on the fourth as Colton Bahling hit Parker Zitzke for the game-winning touchdown.

St. Norbert scored 35 points in the first quarter, with three defensive touchdowns, as the Green Knights rolled past Grinnell 91-0. Nine players got carries for St. Norbert and six scored offensive touchdowns in the win. Five of the team's 13 touchdowns were scored on defense and special teams, while Spenser Thompson-Meyers tied the Division III record with 13 extra points.

The 91-point total matched UMHB's Week 2 win at Albright for the highest Division III point total of the season.

Ferrum put up 81 points, including 19 in the fourth quarter, and held former USA South rival Greensboro to minus-11 yards in an 81-0 victory. Brian Mann ran for 91 yards and two scores, while Zack Clifford was 13-for-16 passing for 246 yards and four touchdowns.

Jagger Green threw for 377 yards and completed 38 of 52 passes, but Lycoming picked him off three times and turned the last one into a game-clinching touchdown in a 27-21 win vs. FDU-Florham. The game matched up unlikely early-season contenders in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Elijah Shemory went 11-for-19 passing for three touchdowns in the win.

Kevin DeWall's old team beat DeWall's new team, and his even older team, on Saturday as Endicott defeated Hobart 27-24. DeWall, a Hobart graduate, was the head coach at Endicott for the past three years before they let him go. He ended up the head coach at his alma mater this season after having served as a longtime assistant. The Gulls jumped out to a 17-0 lead but had to come back after Hobart took a 21-20 lead in the third quarter. Hobart kicked a field goal to cut the lead to 27-24 in the fourth, but stalled on its own 15 on its next possession and Endicott ran out the clock. It was the first win for Endicott in five meetings with the Statesmen.

Kevin Bragaglia returned a punt 92 yards for a touchdown to go up by two scores at the end of the third quarter and Alfred held on to defeat Cortland 38-33. The Red Dragons (2-1, 0-1 Empire 8) had scored the first 14 points of the game, but Alfred tied it up with two scores in two and a half minutes. The Saxons (2-1, 1-0) intercepted two Cortland quarterbacks a total of five times in the win.

Lake Forest scored 21 points in the fourth quarter and the lead changed hands three times in the final five minutes as the Foresters defeated Lawrence 35-34. The Vikings pinned Lake Forest on its 1-yard line, but Jagan Cleary led the Foresters on a 12-play, 99-yard drive to give his team a 28-27 lead. Cleary was 8-for-10 on the drive. Lawrence answered with a nine-play drive capped by D'Andre Weaver's 4-yard touchdown run to take a 34-28 lead with 1:02 left. But Cleary led his team 79 yards in the final 57 seconds, going 4-for-4 for 81 yards. Alex Adams capped it off with an 8-yard run around the right side for the win.

Mateo Renteria electrified Wooster with 388 yards passing in his first collegiate start, and the Fighting Scots' defense protected a three-point lead with an interception and fourth-down stop down the stretch, as Wooster topped DePauw 24-21. Beau Greenwood had interceptions in the first and fourth quarter in the win.

Kean got onto the scoreboard for the first time this season, taking a 3-0 lead on a 21-yard field goal by Marcin Zadlo, but Southern Virginia answered with two touchdowns and went on to win 14-9. Minnesota-Morris was shut out in its first three games of the season, but scored on its first possession on Saturday and went on to defeat Iowa Wesleyan 13-7.

The MIAC's two Top 10 teams rolled over opponents on Saturday, but the other three games were blowouts as well, as MIAC schools outscored opponents by a total of 227-3. Concordia-Moorhead held Hamline to two first downs and 37 yards of total offense in a 55-0 win, giving carries to 18 players. Nobody had more than seven carries, but everyone had positive yards as the Cobbers averaged 6.9 yards per run (excluding kneeldowns). Gustavus Adolphus was shut out as well, while only Augsburg managed to get on the board, losing to St. Olaf 33-3. Khayleb Willis rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns as the Oles improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2007

Central scored five touchdowns but it was a pair of late second-quarter defensive stands that were the game-turners in a 35-14 win at Dubuque. Central remained perfect at 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the American Rivers Conference. It was the first Dutch win at Dubuque since 2009. Twice in the closing 3 minutes of the first half Dubuque had first downs inside the Central 10-yard line and were turned away. Dubuque (2-2, 1-1) had first-and-goal at the Central 5 but was denied after four shots with 1:54 left. The Spartans quickly regained possession and pushed to the Central 1-yard line but were stymied twice from there, including on a fourth-down quarterback sneak attempt that ended the half.
