Birmingham-Southern athletic director Kyndall Waters announced Monday that head football coach Eddie Garfinkle will be relieved of his coaching duties after the team's final game on Nov. 5.

"Eddie has worked tirelessly for our football program over the last nine years," Waters said. "We thank him for his dedication to our student-athletes and service to Birmingham-Southern, and are grateful to him as we begin a new direction. We look forward to the new coach improving our program and helping us compete for a conference championship."

Birmingham-Southern is 1-8 this season, entering the season finale with Centre.

Garfinkle took over a 1-7 program in 2008 — one year after BSC resumed its football program at the NCAA Division III level after a 67-year hiatus — and led the team to a 3-7 finish his inaugural season. In year three of his tenure, the Panthers earned their first winning season since 1937 with a 6-4 finish.

BSC finished 5-4 overall, 3-3 in the SAA at the conclusion of the 2013 season. The Panthers have not earned a winning season since. In the past three seasons, they have gone 9-19 overall and 7-13 in conference play.  To date, Garfinkle has a 41-45 career record with Birmingham-Southern.

The search for the programs seventh coach is currently underway.  The administration hopes to announce a replacement soon.
