A dominant half of defense allowed Merchant Marine to hoist the Secretaries' Cup once again. The annual rivalry game with Coast Guard was tight until the end, but the Bears could not find enough offense to hold off the Mariners in the second half.
The Mariners held Coast Guard to just one first down and 29 yards in the second half, keying a rally from a 21-14 halftime deficit. Merchant Marine won 31-27. Quarterback Robert Moore rushed for 201 yards and running back Wiley Martin added 101 yards and two touchdowns. Derek Victory passed for 229 yards and three scores, but mustered just 25 yards and no scores in the second half.
In the Chowder Bowl, Mass. Maritime rallied for a 28-24 win over SUNY-Maritime. Richie Phillips had three touchdown runs, including the game-winner with 24 seconds to play. The winning drive was set up by a Kyle Johnston fumble recovery.
K.J. Kearney had a record-setting performance for Christopher Newport, as the Captains sent Hampden-Sydney to 0-2 on the season. Kearney completed 24 of 30 passes for a school-record 355 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for two more in a 45-27 win.
Stevenson took an 18-point lead into the fourth quarter, then held off a final frame rally from Albright for a 31-26 win. Three different quarterbacks played for Albright, with each throwing an interception. The Mustangs move to 2-0, while the defending MAC champs fall to 0-2 on the season.
Bethel fell to 0-2, squandering a big lead, rallying to force overtime, then failing to capitalize. Carthage came back from a 16-point halftime deficit and won it in overtime, 40-34. Jamel Davis rushed for 124 yards and three scores, including the clincher in overtime.
St. Norbert also dropped to 0-2 after a first half onslaught from Benedictine. The Eagles jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead, earning head coach Josiah Sears his first win. Ryan Sample passed for 372 yards and four touchdowns in the victory. The Green Knights are still seeking their first win, after posting an undefeated regular season in 2015.
Tanner Matlick passed for 394 yards and four touchdowns as Monmouth moved to 2-0, handing Wartburg a loss in its opener. Wartburg led 15-0 after the first quarter, but it was almost all Scots after that.
Pacific Lutheran held off Cal Lutheran, 17-14, in the season opener for both squads. The Lutes prevailed despite being outgained 427-271.
Union snapped a 12-game losing skid, defeating Western Connecticut 28-13. The Dutchmen jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead, behind running back Jermaine Carn's 113 yards and two touchdowns.
Washington and Lee avoided the dreaded 0-2 start, coming back from a 17-0 fourth quarter deficit for a 21-17 victory. Witt Hawkins had the biggest day a W&L receiver has had in years, catching six passes for 108 yards and the game-winning score.
Luther and St. Olaf played one of the most exciting games of the weekend. The Oles rallied to tie the game with 16 seconds left. Two touchdowns, both followed by two-point conversions, allowed St. Olaf to erase a 16-point deficit over the game's final six minutes. Both teams scored in the first overtime, but the Norse defense held for the 46-40 win in double OT.
Millsaps let a large lead slip away as Trinity (TX) took a lead into the fourth quarter. But the Majors defense tightened and Millsaps was the only team to score in the fourth quarter of a 24-20 win. Andrew Warren's 30-yard touchdown run was the deciding score.
Chris Negron continued to rewrite the Moravian record books, rushing for 167 yards and two scores on 16 carries. The Greyhounds defeated McDaniel, 55-27, compiling a school record 673 yards of offense and 34 first downs. Negron now has 34 rushing touchdowns and 37 total touchdowns, both school records.
De'Eric Bell set records for Guilford, rushing for 295 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries. The Quakers rolled to a 47-32 win over Methodist. Bell, a junior, is on pace to shatter several for Guilford rushing records.
Illinois Wesleyan's defense shut down Nebraska Wesleyan in the second half en route to a 17-13 win. The Titans held the Prairie Wolves to 45 yards of offense in a second half shutout. Kyle Venhuizen had seven tackles including two sacks.
Zach Whitehead set a school record with 421 passing yards as King's defeated Lycoming for the first time in 12 tries. Whitehead has already set four program records in the Monarchs' first two games.
Freshman Josh Pierre-Charles made a quick entrance into the Nichols football record books on Friday night, rushing for a school-record 228 yards on 25 carries, scoring a touchdown in the Bison's 22-7 win vs. Anna Maria. Pierre-Charles had 79 yards in his collegiate debut last week on just nine carries. ... Junior Richie Phillips rushed for a career-high 100 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning 4-yard run with 24 seconds remaining, as Massachusetts Maritime scored twice in the final 4:24 to notch a 28-24 victory over SUNY-Maritime on Friday. ... WPI scored three touchdowns in the first 11 minutes and rolled to a 41-7 win vs. crosstown Worcester State.
