Joel Dettwiler came to UW-La Crosse four years after their last playoff bid and his teams went 3-7, 3-7, 4-6, 3-7 and 3-7.

UW-La Crosse head football coach Joel Dettwiler has announced his resignation. Hired as UW-La Crosse's 12th head football coach in February 2011, Dettwiler finished 16-34 overall (.320) and 12-23 (.343) in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in five seasons at the helm of the Eagles.

UW-La Crosse finished 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the WIAC in 2015.

A total of 40 All-WIAC selections were earned under Dettwiler at UW-La Crosse, including eight first team choices.

"I would like to thank Joel for his tenure at UW-La Crosse," said UW-La Crosse athletic director Kim Blum. "There are countless aspects to running a collegiate football team and they are widely varied. Coach Dettwiler's work ethic in managing to these is second to none. He has brought a strong commitment to academics and teaches the value of giving back to the community to our student-athletes. Above all, I value Joel's passion for the game and his dedication to our program. I wish Joel and his family all the best.

"We will launch the search for our next head football coach as soon as possible," said Blum.

A native of Oregon, Wis., Dettwiler also served as UW-La Crosse's defensive coordinator the last five seasons. Prior to coming to UW-La Crosse, Dettwiler was an assistant coach at Wartburg from 2004 to 2010. He was the linebackers coach and head strength coach from 2004 to 2008 before being named the Knights' defensive coordinator in 2008, a position he held for three seasons.

A 1997 graduate of UW-Platteville, Dettwiler served as an assistant coach and director of football operations for the Pioneers from 2000 to 2004, coaching the defensive backs and linemen. He played in the Pioneers' defensive backfield for four years and was a team captain in 1995. Dettwiler earned his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from UW-Platteville.

Dettwiler earned master's degrees from UW-Madison in 1999 (civil engineering) and from UW-Platteville (education) in 2002.
