Stagg Bowl re-ups for Salem

The Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl will remain in Salem Stadium in Salem, Va., through at least the 2017 season, the NCAA announced Wednesday.

The championship game has been held in Salem since 1993. After the playing of this year's game, more than half of all Division III football championship games will have been played in the same stadium.

The Mount Union football program has practically made Salem a second home in December, winning 11 of the 20 championship games held there. All 15 of the Purple Raiders' trips to the Stagg Bowl have been to Salem.

Over the course of the past 15 years, the city has upgraded the stadium on multiple occasions, including adding turf and upgrading locker room and working media facilities. The city has also hosted the Division III men's basketball semifinals since the mid-1990s and has hosted championships in baseball, softball, women's lacrosse and women's volleyball.

The 2017 Stagg Bowl will be the 25th Division III football championship held in Salem.
