Husson athletic director Bob Reasso announced that football coach Sean Murphy has resigned from his current position, effective at the end of the 2012 season. Murphy will remain an integral part of the athletic department, as he has accepted the position of head men’s lacrosse coach. The lacrosse position has been open since the beginning of the fall season when former head coach Tim Murphy left for a position at Curry. Matt Sweeney has been serving as interim head coach.
Husson is 2-17 in football under Murphy, entering the season finale at Anna Maria.
Reasso explained that, “Sean approached me a couple of weeks ago with the idea of taking over the men’s lacrosse program. We interviewed him along with other candidates and found him to be the best person to lead the program forward. In the two years Sean has been here, though the win-loss record may not reflect it, he has really moved our football program forward. This is Division III college athletics, where academics and citizenship really matter, and he has done a tremendous job in these areas.”
In terms of lacrosse, Murphy touts an impressive coaching and playing resume. He has coached collegiately at three premier lacrosse institutions: spending four seasons at Dickinson as the defensive coordinator, a stint as an assistant at Bowdoin, and a season as defensive coordinator at Plymouth State.
Speaking of his football resignation, Murphy said, “This was a difficult decision for me, but I know that accepting this position is the best move for the Husson University athletic department and my family. I am passionate about coaching and am ready for this next challenge.” Murphy continued, “I am very proud of our football program and the progress the team has made in character development and academic success over the last two years. The program has that solid foundation, and I look forward to watching its growth and future success.”
Murphy will be relinquishing his head football coaching responsibilities, but he will stay involved in the athletic department operations in his assistant athletic director role. He will coach the Eagles in their final 2012 football game against Anna Maria this weekend before he assumes his men’s lacrosse responsibilities, and he will assist in the transition to the new football coach. A search for the next football coach will begin immediately.
After an 0-10 mark in 2011, this season has seen two exciting victories for the Eagles, with a close 28-22 win against Anna Maria in September and a 17-14 overtime win against SUNY-Maritime two weeks ago.
