The Maritime football squad will open up its 2013 home slate with a non-conference matchup against the Mariners of Kings Point. Separated by just under two miles across the Long Island Sound, the two schools renew their rivalry for the fifth consecutive season.

Game Coverage
There will be live coverage of Saturday's contest as well as every regular season home football this season, by accessing this LINK. All-Time Series
Maritime has bested Kings Point in the first three matchups, with the Mariners picking up its first win of the series last season by a 19-14 score. The games between the two squads have all been decided by one touchdown or less, including an overtime victory by Maritime on September 19, 2009.

Homecoming
The 2013 Homecoming ceremonies will commence on Friday, September 20 with several on-campus events including a Movie on the Quad at 8 p.m. Saturday's events will include the 50th Anniversary Breakfast for the Class of 1963, as well as campus tours, and tours of T.S. Empire State VI in the early afternoon.

On-field activities begin with a March On and Pass in Review by the Class of 1988 as well as this year's freshman class, who will then all welcome the Privateers to the field for the 2 p.m. kickoff.

Conference Rookie of the Week Honors
With a pair of interceptions and six tackles, freshman Francis Gannon (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) was named the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference's top rookie for his efforts against Mass. Maritime last Thursday.

Scouting the Privateers
Maritime had a bye in week 1, followed by the Sixth Annual Chowder Bowl against the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers last Thursday, a game won by the home team by a 24-20 score.

In the team's first game, the offense put up a pair of touchdowns as junior running back Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the second and third quarters to help the Privateers build up a 20-10 lead with 22 seconds left in the third quarter.

The rushing game was one of the high points of the team in its first game of the season against Mass. Maritime as the team gained 267 yards on the ground while picking up 17 of the teams 20 first towns by way of the run, in addition to Caneparo's pair of scores.

Injuries will force a changing in the guard at the quarterback position, with freshman Isaiah Covington (Brooklyn, N.Y./FDR) pressed into action after sophomore starter Zachary Chilcott (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) went down with an injury. In relief, Covington went 1-for-3 with a nine-yard gain while also picking up 26 yards on the ground.

On the defensive side of the ball, junior Nick Coffiey (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) led the squad with nine tackles including seven solo stops. Classmate Chris Shehata (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) picked up the lone sack of the game for a five-yard loss against the Buccaneers.

In the secondary, freshman Francis Gannon was targeted by the Mass. Maritime offense but the newcomer made the Buccaneers pay with a pass breakup and a pair of red zone interceptions. Sophomore Kameron Knight (Clayton, N.C./West Johnson) also picked up an interception with a seven-yard return.

On special teams, sophomore Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) was 2-for-3 on field goals, with both of his makes over 35 yards. His longest attempt of 46 yards was blocked by the Mass. Maritime defense. Dietrich also amassed 266 yards on five kickoffs. Punting duties were handled by junior Duke Alvora (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) who placed one inside the 20 yard line as he totaled 117 yards on three punts, before being forced to the sideline with an injury. Freshman John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) came on in place of Alvora, and sent away a punt for 31 yards.

Scouting the Mariners
With two games, and more importantly two wins under their belts the Mariners of Kings Point play their final non-conference game as they tune up for Liberty League play next week. In week 1, the Mariners defeated Susquehanna by seven followed by another touchdown victory over the Coast Guard Academy in their friendly confines in Kings Point.

Offensively the team is averaging 31 points a game, while picking up just under 450 yards of offense per game. The offensive unit is led by sophomore quarterback Matthew McDaniels as he has rushed for 441 yards and six touchdowns, while tossing over 130 yards and has one passing touchdown. McDaniels weakness through two games has been the fumble as he lost control off the ball four times, and able to recover just one.

On the defensive side of the ball, the senior core of linebackers have been headlining for the Mariners as Matthew Morse, Scott Cokeley, Michael Biehn and Patrick Clarke are the only four players with more than 10 tackles through the teams first two games. Morse and classmate defensive end Jacob Washer lead the way in terms of sacks with 1.5 each.

Special teams sees Daniel Kennedy handle field goal and extra point duties, going 0-for-1 on the young season in field goals, and is 8-for-8 on extra points. Freshman Spencer Blauw does the punting, and has booted seven kicks away for 276 yards including three inside the 20-yard line, but has also had one punt blocked back in his direction.

After today, Maritime heads back on the road for its final non-conference game of the regular season with a trip to Wayne, N.J. to matchup against the William Paterson Pioneers. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 28.

Kings Point returns home next weekend for their homecoming ceremonies, as kickoff against Liberty League foe Hobart kicks off at 2 p.m. also on Saturday.
