Games of Sept. 9-10, 2016

Offense

 QB Pete Coughlin, Sr., Washington & Jefferson

Coughlin took just 26 snaps (one no play) on Saturday against Grove City and threw only 16 passes, but 12 went for completions and seven of those went for touchdowns in a 65-13 win. His touchdown strikes went to three receivers, including three of them to junior Jesse Zubik. Coughlin threw for 337 yards, or 21.1 yards per attempt.

OL Will Devine, Dereck Harenda, Noah Berlanga, Trey White, Jacob Harton, Southwestern

The Southwestern offensive line paved the way for 246 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in a come-from-behind 24-17 win over McMurry. The Pirates outgained the War Hawks 409-99 in the game, including 246-40 on the ground. Dylan Wilburn rushed for 117 yards and two scores on 19 carries, while quarterback Frederick Hover added 84 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

RB Drew Patterson
So., UW-Whitewater

Patterson tallied 22 carries for 227 yards and three TDs to help lead the Warhawks to a 59-13 win vs. Belhaven. His 54-yard run with 3:17 left in the first half put UWW ahead for good. Patterson added TDs of 23 yards in the third quarter and 17 yards in the fourth quarter.

RB John Distefano
Sr., Montclair State

DiStefano carried 26 times for 184 yards and two touchdowns, as well as a 70-yard TD reception in a 25-15 win vs. FDU-Florham. His 74-yard run in the third quarter gave MSU the lead and he punctuated his evening with a 2-yard TD run for the final score.


RB De'Eric Bell
Jr., Guilford

Bell set school records for rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in one of the top performances in Guilford's 110-year history as he carried a career-high 29 times for 295 yards and four touchdowns to help the Quakers past Methodist. His 295 yards is fifth in ODAC history.


WR Vincenzo Ferraro
Jr., St. Lawrence

Ferraro had eight catches for 161 yards and three touchdowns Saturday in a win vs. Norwich, marking his third consecutive game of 150-plus receiving yards, including the 2015 playoff game vs. Mount Union.

WR Sam Markham
Jr., Central

Markham broke his own school record with 14 catches in a 45-17 win vs. Augustana. He went for 192 receiving yards and two touchdowns as Central improved to 2-0. He scored twice in a span of three minutes to help the Dutch expand their lead from 17-10 to 31-10 and put the game away.

Defense

DE Mitchell Maday
So., Hamline

Mitchell had a huge night as the Pipers and kept possession of The Paint Bucket with a 21-7 win over Macalester. His 4-1/2 sacks is the most in a game this season by a D-III player. He also forced a pair of fumbles, including one at the Mac 1 and another that stopped the last Scot drive. His seven tackles led Hamline for the game.

DT Addison Elliott
Sr., Southwestern

Elliott helped the Southwestern defense limit McMurry to 99 yards of total offense. Elliott posted four tackles, including three for loss, and two sacks in a 24-17 victory. One of his sacks came on fourth down, ending the War Hawks' final drive.


DT Patrick Vidal
Jr., Catholic

Vidal had 2.5 tackles for loss, including a sack for 16 yards, forcing a punt with just over five minutes left as the Cardinals blanked Rochester in the second half of a 27-14 win. He also forced a fumble and blocked a 19-yard field-goal attempt. He finished the game with five total tackles.


DE Luke Packard
Sr., Trinity (Texas)

Packard finished with a team-leading 12 tackles in a 24-20 loss at Millsaps, as well as pacing all Tiger players with 2-1/2 sacks and 5-1/2 tackles for loss. The defense allowed just 54 total yards in the first and third quarters.


 

LB Bruce Damon
So., King's

Damon helped King's to a 41-20 come-from-behind victory in the Monarchs' first-ever win at Lcyoming. Damon posted 16 tackles, including 11 solo stops from his outside linebacker position, while registering a career-best three sacks and breaking up a pass in the process.

LB Jake Harmon
Sr., Bluffton

Harmon forced a fumble and recovered two, all on Trine's first three possessions, as Bluffton went up 14-0 on Saturday. The Beavers secured a 37-31 win, their first-ever win over the Thunder, leading to their first 2-0 start since 2004. He led the Beavers with 12 stops, four solos.


LB Dawson Brown
So., Bethel

Brown blocked a punt and landed on it inside the 10-yard line, setting up a Bethel touchdown. He later intercepted a pass and ran it back 55 yards for his a touchdown of his own. In addition, Brown recorded 3-1/2 tackles for loss and had 15 total tackles, six solo.

 

CB Michael Alada
Sr., St. Thomas

Alada intercepted two passes, returning one for a TD to help No. 4 St. Thomas top UW-Stout 57-17. UST led 7-0 late in the first quarter when Alada jumped the receiver and took an interception 23 yards for his first career TD. Stout was driving late in the half when Alada leaped high to pick off a pass at the goal line. Alana added two solo and one assisted tackle.

S Colin Buck
Sr., UW-Whitewater

Buck tallied four tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble to help the Warhawks defeat Belhaven 59-13. He forced a fumble late in the second quarter to help UWW make a goal line stand and set up a touchdown. Buck posted his first pick early in the second quarter, and returned his second 79 yards for a TD early in the fourth.

S Mitchell Shober
Jr., Juniata

Shober totaled six tackles in a 42-21 win against Dickinson on Saturday. He also had an interception, a pass breakup, and recovered a fumble off a mishandled punt in inside Red Devil territory that led to a Juniata touchdown.


CB  Dylan Stepleton
Sr., Coe

Stepleton recorded his first career interception for a touchdown against Cornell, lifting the Kohawks' lead to 21-0. He also intercepted a pass on the very next play after his pick six. Stepleton added a pair of solo tackles in the 63-6 win.


Special teams

K Blaine Bursey
Sr., WPI

Bursey accounted for 10 of the Engineers 41 points vs. Worcester State. He converted all four extra-point attempts and was successful on field goals from 35 and 36 yards in the second half.


P Joe Carter
Sr., Christopher Newport

Carter put three of his four punts inside the 20-yard line, including a boot that angled out of bounds at the 1. Carter helped the Captains win the battle for field position all day as CNU won at Hampden-Sydney, 45-27.


RET Alex Wasserman
So., Cortland

Wasserman returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter to give Cortland the lead for good in 49-21 win over Framingham State. He also blocked a punt that set up a short Cortland TD drive early in the second quarter that extended the lead to 21-7.


ST DJ Warkenthien
So., North Central

Warkenthein forced a fumble on a kickoff return which enabled North Central to quickly build on its lead in a 28-point third quarter. He also recorded eight total tackles and two sacks.
